Veterans & Military

Legal and benefits assistance for veterans, service members, and their families.

Veterans in Wyoming can get help with VA disability claims, discharge upgrades, and benefits appeals from several free, veteran-specific programs — some run by the state, some by national nonprofits. If you were denied VA benefits or received an Other Than Honorable discharge connected to PTSD, TBI, or military sexual trauma, there are specific pro bono legal programs built for exactly that situation.

National program providing free representation before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) for denied VA benefits. Runs a Discharge Upgrade Program for veterans with Other-Than-Honorable discharges linked to PTSD, TBI, or MST, plus a Veterans Naturalization Assistance Program.

Eligibility, how to apply, contact info
Who qualifies

For CAVC appeals: veterans who received a denial from the Board of Veterans' Appeals and are within the 120-day appeal window. For discharge upgrades: veterans discharged Other Than Honorable (OTH) or Undesirable who have a diagnosis or symptoms of PTSD, TBI, or another mental health condition, and where TVC finds at least one meritorious legal argument to bring to the Discharge Board.

How to get help

For a CAVC appeal, use the online application at vetsprobono.org (linked from the 'Filing an Appeal to the CAVC' page) — this both files your appeal request and asks TVC for help finding a volunteer attorney; you can also call (888) 838-7727 (toll-free) or (202) 628-8164, fax (202) 628-8169, or email intake@vetsprobono.org. Act quickly: you only have 120 days from the BVA denial to appeal. For a discharge upgrade, call (202) 733-3324 or email upgrades@vetsprobono.org; TVC will review your discharge status and mental health history against their three criteria before matching you with a free attorney. TVC also runs a twice-monthly virtual Pro Bono Legal Clinic for veterans and families (call (202) 733-3317 for an appointment) and a separate clinic for women veterans only (call (202) 733-3329).

Who qualifies

Veterans who are currently homeless and seeking help finding employment; specific income eligibility thresholds are not published by VOANR or the U.S. Department of Labor (the program's federal funder). DOL's general guidance frames eligibility around veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness rather than a fixed dollar threshold, and actual eligibility is determined case-by-case during intake — contact them directly to confirm.

How to get help
